Meeting Notes 31 January, 2013

Welcome New Members!

This is what we discussed in the CILA Meeting 29, January
2013.  These are some opportunities for people to get involved
with CILA!

Skiing Day(s)
-We are thinking of doing this again!  If we do it with IGNITE
again, we will likely split into smaller groups.
-VAIL wants to sponsor an adaptive sports event.  They can
cover everything but food for two days for four people.
-We may have out second IGNITE Day during President's Day
weekend.  Still under discussion.

Big Buff, Little Buff Mentoring Program
-Helping children with disabilities develop social skills and
feel a sense of community.
-One event under discussion is making friendship bracelets.
-Another option we are considering is a Celestial Seasonings
Tour, which is FREE!
-We are seeking opportunities for recruiting.

Ropes Course
-Learn how to climb with a rope.
-The course is ran by the University of Colorado at Boulder's
Recreation Center.
-Discounts may be given.
-This is still under discussion.

ITP
-Interactive Theatre Project.
-People are wanted to help with this.
-The scenes made will involve people with disabilities.

Kelly and Tylyn's "Brainchild"
-There is discussion to bring Nick Vuicic, an Australian
motivational speaker without limbs.
-Would like to collaborate with other student groups at CU and
Metro, etc. lots of planning to do

Campus Transportation Project
-Temporary campus transportation may soon be available.
-What does this mean? If someone has an injury or somehow
cannot make it to class on time, they can use this system.
-CILA and Veterans Affairs have finished the proposal to send
to Studnt Government.  Alternatives are being explored.

Mailing List
-We are getting a mailing list! Yay!

Ideas, Suggestions, Etc?
- E-mail CILA at cila@colorado.edu

If you want to get involved in any of the above, please email

Update from the meeting we had on 11-29-12!

Hey, all!!  Sorry this is a bit late, but it is THAT time of the semester!  So, here
is what you missed!!

- We welcomed new members Franky and Jackie!!

- CMA and CILA have been partners in the past and we are teaming up again
to have a social gathering/semester's end/Holiday send-off!  Hallett Hall is
also going to be collaborating!  :)  We are trying to hammer out the details, but
here are some things to think about:

      - It has to be before the 20th of Dec

      - Preliminary time/date was Tues, Dec 11th, from 3-5pm in the CMA study
area -- We need to get that time reserved.

      - Food: We need to get an estimate for Subway (find out if we CAN order
from Subway or is there a conflict of interest with taking food from the UMC
and going to the C4C?)

             - If not, we can purchase the fixings for nachos or taco salads
      - Make a flyer, bring to the advocacy centers and advertise on the DS
Listserv and other places

      - It will be a mingling party.  We will have flyers and information about
CILA, what our mission is, our goals and how we spread the word about
disability awareness.

      - No presentations, just getting to know each other, talk about what we
have done and our goals, and try to recruit new members
UPDATE: Franky said that Friday, Dec 14th, in the evening is the best day.

- Ignite Adaptive Skiing

      - Franky & Jackie want to be a part of the ski day adventure

      - We would like to go up together and we found out that the Volunteer
Resource Center has drivers who are certified to drive a 15-passenger
vehicle.

      - We need to find out how to get a vehicle, which dept, and how much?

      - We did tentatively set a date for skiing: Saturday, January 19, 2013
(MLK weekend).

- Big Buff Little Buff

      - There will be a holiday cookie or baking party on December 8!

      - Holiday goodies will be made and donated in the community

      - If you want to be a mentor for a Little Buff or if you know of a potential
Little Buff, please contact Kelly!

- Leadership

      - Priscilla, the founder and co-chair of CILA, is graduating this semester!
Esha, the other co-chair is taking a break for a bit.

      - Kelly, our secretary/treasurer, is A-MAZING!!  This semester she has
stepped numerous times to see CILA's mission and activities fulfilled!!  She is
our NEW lead co-chair!

      - Our new co-chair will be announced soon....

      - Arya is going to try out the position for the secretary

      - Treasurer is still up for grabs!!  <hint hint to all ya'll!!>

      - Even though Priscilla is graduating, she will be around for this-coming
semester to help with the transition

If I missed anything or if anyone has suggestions, please feel free to contact
either Priscilla or Kelly.

Take care,
Priscilla & Kelly

CILA is off to a great start for another great semester! We've had a few meetings and made some very exciting plans! Our first program of the year was a ropes course with our Big Buff, Little Buff project and everyone had a blast! Some other very exciting things happening this semester:
  • IGNITE adaptive skiing, come up to Eldora for a fun day of skiing with CILA, or learn how you can become an adaptive ski guide!
  • Interactive Theater Project, participate in a piece of theater that can help spread disability awareness and help destroy negative perceptions of people with disabilities!
  • Dennis Small Cultural Center, open discussion on disability, Thursday October 18!
  • Diversity Summit, help us put on a great event to help more people understand disabilities!
  • Big Buff, Little Buff, mentor and inspire younger community members!
  • And many more ways you can get involved in leadership roles in our community!
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 11th at 5:15 pm in the C4C Building, Room S435.Come learn about how you can get involved and meet some awesome people. If you have any questions, would like to participate in any of the above activities, or would like to join our email list, contact us at cila@colorado.edu

Thursday, September 15, 2011

1)      CILA - Wednesday September 14, 2011

2)      StrengthsQuest – Those who signed up are: Dina, Cecilia, Esha, Jenny, Tan, Kelly M., Tomoko, Katie, Marisa, Jordan, and Olivia.
  • Annie Piatt will be coming from Career Services on October 12 to give a presentation.
3)      Diversity Summit – November 8-10.
  • We have a few options here. We can either set up a panel or present a part of our Interactive Theater Project. This will depend on how far along we are on the ITP. We will decide on a plan of action soon and will organize groups for panels if needed.
  • We also want to have a table with business cards, fun info and etiquette/awareness. Tables are easy to run and we need someone there at all times!!
4)      Interactive Theater Project (so far: Priscilla, Amy, Kelly M., Dina, Esha and Mercedes)
  • We are still working on ITP to get a performance lined up. If we can be ready by November, we would like to present a part of the performance at the Diversity Summit. This means we need more people in our meetings, either as advisors and storytellers or as potential actors. Meetings are tentatively planned for Fridays.
  • Rebecca Brown Adelman will be coming September 28 to talk about the progress of the group.
5)      Boulder Polar Plunge in February
  • The organization is looking for volunteers for the Plunge that will take place in February. The Plunge offers aid to Alzheimer’s research and CILA would like to show a strong support of the organization. Anyone interested?
6)      Panel for SLHS 1010 – Thursday October 6 3:30 – 4:45pm
  • During panels we like to discuss our various relationships with disabilities and impacts that they have in our lives. Conversations gravitate around proper etiquette around the disabled, disabled lifestyles and CILA goals. These panels are open to anyone that can attend (not just those with disabilities!), and the more that come, the easier it is for everyone.
  • Those who would like to be a part of the panel are: Jenny, Tomoko, Kelly M., Stephanie, and Marcus.
7)      EXPAND paralympic event – 1st meeting is Thurs, Sept 22 from 8:30-9:30am in Rec Center’s Glass Conference Room.  Those interested so far: Amy, Jordan, Esha, Kelly M., Marisa, Jenny L.

8)      Ropes Course – Esha on planning

9)      Epilepsy Awareness Project – Jenny L.

10)  Big Buffs, Little Buffs – developments from Esha and Kelly M.
  • Anyone who is interested in helping should speak up! We could use the help! Glenda from Disability Services will be helping with this project.
11)  CMA Ableism Awareness workshop – Wednesday September 21 at 6pm
  • Priscilla will be planning workshop, which will be taking place in the CMA room N320 in the C4C building. Anyone interested?
12)  People Project
  • This is a project John Meister and the group began to develop last semester. The idea is to have 4-5 individuals on campus highlighted in the hallway of DS. We want to have a picture, a small bio, and a summary of this individual’s support of the disabled community. We need help in choosing who we want to showcase and in photography, writing, etc for the bio.
13)  Presenting ZBT with plaque – Last semester ZBT fraternity helped CILA with fundraising.  Annabel said she might be able to get a plaque, but if she can’t find one, does anyone know of a good place for a plaque?

14)  FUN SOCIAL EVENT?! – We want to have some kind of fun event for the whole group. Ideas?

15) Fundraising ideas - We are thinking of doing a bake sale of some sort as well as a silent auction.

16) Jenny L. is new secretary!!! YAY!

Beginning of the Fall 2011 Semester!

August 31, 2011

At the meeting we welcomed everyone, old and new, to the group. Introductions and great stories filled most of the time, which is never a bad thing! We discussed plans and hopes for this new semester, so these are the items that will be on this semester's agenda
  • Ropes Course for Leadership - with Esha
  • Big Buffs, Little Buffs - a community outreach project including Esha and Kelly M. They hope to help disabled children in the community by showing them the possibilities of being disabled.
  • StrengthsQuest - Amy will send an email soon asking for participants. The "quest" is an online test that determines your leadership qualities and how you can use them in becoming a better leader. Annie Piatt, from Career Services, will be running the discussion.
  • Paralympics on Campus - We will need people participating in event creation and in the events themselves!
  • Diversity Summit - Of the 30,000 students on campus, CILA is the only group dedicated to disabilities. We will be running a table and spreading the word on campus.
  • Interactive Theater Project - Priscilla, Amy, Kelly M. and others have been working on this project. We want situations involving disabilities to be proposed to the audience to see how they would respond. This project can use actors and storytellers.
Remember, this was our first meeting and we are still trying to get all the info compiled for each event. The blog and your emails will keep you regularly updated on all events. Welcome back CILA!!!
