New semester, clean-up, first meeting, and an event already!!

Hey, All!  Happy New Year!  Hope you are all well-rested and ready to start the new semester.  Personally, I could use some more break!!!  :)  Oh well, time to go anyways!

With the new year, I've decided to do a little clean-up...on our email list.  SO.... If you have not attended ANY of our meetings or events AND you do not respond to this email, I will remove your name from the email list.  I hate getting unwanted emails, so I want to be conscientious of who I'm emailing.  If you are a regular member and attend events, you will not be removed.

Ok... Our first meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19th, at 5pm.  It will be in the conference next to Disability Services in the C4C building, the same place we've always had it.  Thank you to our faculty support, John Meister, for booking our room for us for the semester!  :)  There will be no guest speaker, as I would like to just get back together and discuss what we accomplished last semester and what we, as a group, hope to accomplish this semester.

We already have an event!!!!  Since it is before our first meeting, I need to do an online sign-up.
Who can help sit at the table for this one?

2011 Spring Student Involvement

AND

Volunteer Fair!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

It's the same thing we did last semester.  We sit at a table and talk about what our group does and why it's cool to be a member!  :)
Please let me know if you are able to participate!

Thanks,
Priscilla

October 27 agenda

Welcome
Discuss Logo
Gerard led the discussion and we settled on not having the wheelchair symbol anymore and will have 4 hands reaching towards each other with the letters C I L A in them, somehow.  A few examples were drawn but if anyone is good with graphics, please make some drafts up and email them to bldrgerard@mac.com or cila@colorado.edu.
Volunteering at Schools with Annabel
Annabel is volunteering at a school in Boulder to help kids with disabilities.  She has the information needed to get started.  I will send an email to those interested, who were Jenny, Kelly M., Eliot (maybe), Kelly K., Matt, & Meghan.  Anyone else that is interested, please let me know.
Any other ideas for volunteering and community outreach?
Recreation Center Innovations with Karen and Howard
    Molly, Esha, Amy, and Priscilla
Karen will set up a meeting because the Rec Center wants to start out with that and then we'll go from there
Great job on the poster!
   Kelly K., Gabby, & Esha!
Outcome of Disability Awareness Week
Ethan's event was a hit.  No one came for Thursday's movie night.  We may need to re-think our advertising strategies, but that also leads us into our next topic...
Leadership Certificates
In order to get the certificate, a member has to attend 5 of the 7 meetings AND participate in at least 2 events.  If member is unable to do one of those two, they can supplement that with taking on a project or doing some community outreach/volunteer work which would promote either the group or disability awareness.
There are only 2 events left this semester, so if a member is unsure of whether they'll qualify for the certificate or not, they need to email or text Priscilla.
Upcoming Events
October 30th - abstract for CU Gold Opportunity due. Need ideas.
Kelly M., Jenny, & Eliot will help come up with something for the 60-min workshop we need to give in Feb at the CU Leadership conference.  I'll email an abstract of what we're doing to Anna Damm from CU Gold to get us on the roster.
November 2nd - Myths about Disabilities at Women's Resource Center from 12pm to 1pm
Karen Boyd from DS & Priscilla are presenting at this event.  Please attend, this does count as an event.
November 3rd - Diversity Summit: Universal Access at Glenn Miller Ballroom (UMC) 10:45am - 12:15pm.
Amy, Amelia, & Priscilla will talk about how universal access is important to them.  If anyone else wants to go to speak, they are welcome to.  Even if you don't want to speak, the diversity summit is not just about disabilities, it's about all diversities and will be going Tuesday and Wednesday in the Glenn Miller Ballroom.  Check it out!!!
Finished video from Courtney!
Couldn't make it to the meeting and will share the video at a later date
Interactive Theatre Group with Rebecca Adelman
What kind of theater production would you be interested in seeing?
What issues should it address and what format should it take?
Is anyone interested in working with them on this?
Think of what types of ideas or storylines you want for this project.  Also, if anyone is interested in participating in a scriptwriting or acting capacity, let Rebecca know.  They also have a paid student position for actors, if anyone is interested.  She will be at our Nov 10th meeting with more info and to answer any questions.  In the meantime, the website is http://www.colorado.edu/interactivetheatre/index.htm.
Quinn Gray - engage disability community for Honors Diversity Seminar
He is looking to engage people in wheelchairs to learn more about the culture, what their education experience has been, etc.... for his Honors class.  They are also looking for someone who is in a wheelchair to come speak to their class and have a discussion.  The class meets in the Humanities building on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11-12:15.  Anyone interested should contact Quinn at jgraybeard@gmail.com.
Sarah Lind - Honors Thesis on identity, labeling, and autism
Sarah is writing her Honors Thesis with a focus on those with Autism & Asperger's.  If you have it or have any experience with it through a family member or friend, she is very interested in speaking with you as part of her research.  Please email her at Sarah.Lind@colorado.edu.
Next Meeting: Wednesday, November 10th.
Last bit of business:
Sierra, our newest CILA member, went to Pizza with a Catch on Monday to represent us.  She said that not many people were there but those that were found it eye-opening and there was some good discussion.  Margaret Behm, the coordinator of this event, would like to do something similar to this next semester.

Matt Gurwitz, one of our members, is writing a paper titled "Don't Label Me" about his thoughts on getting rid of the word "disability" from society.  He would like input from members and someone who may be interested in being video interviewed.  Those interested should email him at mattgurwitz@gmail.com.

Pizza With a Catch

Tuesday, Oct 26th, at 6:30pm in Farrand Hall for an event called "Pizza with a Catch"The coordinator Margaret Behm wrote, "Our idea is to give each resident who comes a "disability" such as no hands, blindfolded, etc. They will be helped to a seat and have to try and eat their pizza with their disability. This should hopefully be fun and challenging, but then afterward we want to facilitate a discussion about how that felt, how it applies to their lives, etc."

This should be pretty fun and an eye-opening experience for those without disabilities.  You don't have to do anything, just be there to facilitate the discussion afterwards.  Oh, and did I mention there was free pizza???  :)
