About Us

Boulder, Colorado, United States
We are a group that promotes leadership and disability awareness on campus

Thursday, September 15, 2011

1)      CILA - Wednesday September 14, 2011

2)      StrengthsQuest – Those who signed up are: Dina, Cecilia, Esha, Jenny, Tan, Kelly M., Tomoko, Katie, Marisa, Jordan, and Olivia.
  • Annie Piatt will be coming from Career Services on October 12 to give a presentation.
3)      Diversity Summit – November 8-10.
  • We have a few options here. We can either set up a panel or present a part of our Interactive Theater Project. This will depend on how far along we are on the ITP. We will decide on a plan of action soon and will organize groups for panels if needed.
  • We also want to have a table with business cards, fun info and etiquette/awareness. Tables are easy to run and we need someone there at all times!!
4)      Interactive Theater Project (so far: Priscilla, Amy, Kelly M., Dina, Esha and Mercedes)
  • We are still working on ITP to get a performance lined up. If we can be ready by November, we would like to present a part of the performance at the Diversity Summit. This means we need more people in our meetings, either as advisors and storytellers or as potential actors. Meetings are tentatively planned for Fridays.
  • Rebecca Brown Adelman will be coming September 28 to talk about the progress of the group.
5)      Boulder Polar Plunge in February
  • The organization is looking for volunteers for the Plunge that will take place in February. The Plunge offers aid to Alzheimer’s research and CILA would like to show a strong support of the organization. Anyone interested?
6)      Panel for SLHS 1010 – Thursday October 6 3:30 – 4:45pm
  • During panels we like to discuss our various relationships with disabilities and impacts that they have in our lives. Conversations gravitate around proper etiquette around the disabled, disabled lifestyles and CILA goals. These panels are open to anyone that can attend (not just those with disabilities!), and the more that come, the easier it is for everyone.
  • Those who would like to be a part of the panel are: Jenny, Tomoko, Kelly M., Stephanie, and Marcus.
7)      EXPAND paralympic event – 1st meeting is Thurs, Sept 22 from 8:30-9:30am in Rec Center’s Glass Conference Room.  Those interested so far: Amy, Jordan, Esha, Kelly M., Marisa, Jenny L.

8)      Ropes Course – Esha on planning

9)      Epilepsy Awareness Project – Jenny L.

10)  Big Buffs, Little Buffs – developments from Esha and Kelly M.
  • Anyone who is interested in helping should speak up! We could use the help! Glenda from Disability Services will be helping with this project.
11)  CMA Ableism Awareness workshop – Wednesday September 21 at 6pm
  • Priscilla will be planning workshop, which will be taking place in the CMA room N320 in the C4C building. Anyone interested?
12)  People Project
  • This is a project John Meister and the group began to develop last semester. The idea is to have 4-5 individuals on campus highlighted in the hallway of DS. We want to have a picture, a small bio, and a summary of this individual’s support of the disabled community. We need help in choosing who we want to showcase and in photography, writing, etc for the bio.
13)  Presenting ZBT with plaque – Last semester ZBT fraternity helped CILA with fundraising.  Annabel said she might be able to get a plaque, but if she can’t find one, does anyone know of a good place for a plaque?

14)  FUN SOCIAL EVENT?! – We want to have some kind of fun event for the whole group. Ideas?

15) Fundraising ideas - We are thinking of doing a bake sale of some sort as well as a silent auction.

16) Jenny L. is new secretary!!! YAY!

Beginning of the Fall 2011 Semester!

August 31, 2011

At the meeting we welcomed everyone, old and new, to the group. Introductions and great stories filled most of the time, which is never a bad thing! We discussed plans and hopes for this new semester, so these are the items that will be on this semester's agenda
  • Ropes Course for Leadership - with Esha
  • Big Buffs, Little Buffs - a community outreach project including Esha and Kelly M. They hope to help disabled children in the community by showing them the possibilities of being disabled.
  • StrengthsQuest - Amy will send an email soon asking for participants. The "quest" is an online test that determines your leadership qualities and how you can use them in becoming a better leader. Annie Piatt, from Career Services, will be running the discussion.
  • Paralympics on Campus - We will need people participating in event creation and in the events themselves!
  • Diversity Summit - Of the 30,000 students on campus, CILA is the only group dedicated to disabilities. We will be running a table and spreading the word on campus.
  • Interactive Theater Project - Priscilla, Amy, Kelly M. and others have been working on this project. We want situations involving disabilities to be proposed to the audience to see how they would respond. This project can use actors and storytellers.
Remember, this was our first meeting and we are still trying to get all the info compiled for each event. The blog and your emails will keep you regularly updated on all events. Welcome back CILA!!!

WE MADE OVER $100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again, a BIG thank you to Annabel, who coordinated this, as well as Olivia, Sarah, Gabby, Amanda, Molly, and Kieran.  If I'm missing somebody who also helped or came by to buy some goodies, please let me know.

4)    Fundraising
a)     Letters with Hilary
We have a draft that is going to Disability Services to be approved. Start compiling your list of friends and family to send the letters.  If anyone has any suggestions on the letter, please let her know before the next meeting.  Priscilla will send a draft to everyone, as well as to John M. to confirm it is okay and to find out if we can use university letterhead or what the appropriate protocol is.

Anyone who has contact with business owners, please contact Priscilla who can pass that information on to Kieran.  He also needs a letter with our mission, what we do, and what we hope to accomplish.  Priscilla will send that to him.

We want to get started with bake sales for recruitment and fundraising. We will be shooting for sometime next week. (Mardi Gras goodies).  She's thinking Tuesday and passed around a list for people to sign up with who is interested in helping.  Annabel also wants to do some sidewalk chalking.

People who were interested were: Colin, Alex, Ally, Sarah, Olivia, Hilary, & Gabby
6)    People Project – John Meister
7)    Volunteering Opportunities – Annabel

Interesting Letter to the Editor about Bystander Interventions

Here is a link to the Daily Camera. Professor Kraft wrote a compelling letter to the editor about his experiences in Boulder. When he was in obvious distress, no one offered him help.

http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_17504449?IADID=Search-www.dailycamera.com-www.dailycamera.com&IADID=Search-www.dailycamera.com-www.dailycamera.com

The Community Health Board has asked for our input in response to this and other Bystander Intervention related experiences. Please look this over and think of how a bystander should act to make a bad situation better.

"Disability in Society" Panel

Yesterday, Priscilla, Molly, Annabel, Eliot and Jordan went to Cindy Donahue's class on "Disability in Society" to discuss each of their relationships with disabilities. The class was very receptive and asked a lot of meaningful questions for the panelists. With every day comes an opportunity to spread disability awareness and March 1 was a successful day!

Meeting March 2

Hey everyone,

I'm sorry I've been slacking on this blog lately. However, we have a great agenda planned for tomorrow evening, including a visit from one of the founding members of CILA, Tricia Downing! I hope you all can make it. Same time, same place.

Amy

Agenda - February 16, 2011

1. Welcome
Attendees: Priscilla, Amy, Hilary, John M., Daniel, Amanda Stewart (from the CU Foundation), Colin, Teresa, Kelly M., Kieran (from ZBT)
2. Guest Speaker: Amanda from the CU Foundation
Amanda spoke with us about a way to raise money for CILA by starting with a letter-writing campaign.

Hilary is working on creating a template for personal letters for contacts. The idea is that each member can send out about 10 letters asking for donations from personal contacts so that we can fund future events.
2nd guest speaker: Kieran Dunstan from the ZBT fraternity
His fraternity wants to help with fundraising for CILA and other volunteer opportunities.  We'll also help with his "On the Ball" fundraising event.
3. Recurring Agenda Items
Fund-raising Committee - Annabel, Meghan, Eliot, Hilary, Kelly M., Kelly K. and Gabby
People Project - John Meister, Gerard, Amy, Kelly K., Annabel, Meghan and Priscilla
Interactive Theater Project - Priscilla, Kelly K., Amy, Molly and Meghan
Meeting - Friday at 3pm in the Dennis Small Cultural Center of the UMC (4th floor).
        Volunteering Opportunities - Annabel
        Under-represented Student Group (CUSG)
We elected Daniel to represent CILA at this group and we hope to organize future events or projects together to spread awareness on campus about our group.
Daniel raised a concern about he is not given voting status on CUSG because he is considered a part-time student due to medical reasons, but since part-time students are largely under-represented on this campus, this raises another issue.
* Will talk to Cindy and John about it.
4. Cindy Donahue's "Disability in Society" panel - Priscilla, Annabel and Eliot
        Tuesday, March 1st from 12:30 to 1:45
Teresa will do it and Amy will check to see if she can get out of her class which is at that time
5. We're co-sponsoring a concert with Ethan Johnston, former CILA member and CU student
Hopefully mid-April, already have a band
Talk to Priscilla if you are interested in planning
Kelly M. will also be assisting with that
6. Final logo
7. New website http://www.colorado.edu/studentgroups/cila/CILA/Home.html includes blog - thanks to Gerard!

Attendees: Kelly K., Annabel, Gerard, Daniel, John M., Eliot, Gabby, Suzy (from Career Services), Kelly M., Amy, & Priscilla

2. Hand out remaining certificates

3. Guest Speaker: Derrick Watson – Following Your Passion
It was a great presentation by Derrick.  He talked about this was an active process and that it needed to be about YOU.  Know your skills and talents and don't be afraid to THINK BIG!!!!
Thanks again, Derrick!

~ Part of that passion or finding out what you want to do can be facilitated by those at Career Services.  Suzy Shotts from CS was here to talk about those options, which include workshops, help with resumes and interviewing, and a listing of internships & career opportunities.  They are free and open to all students.  Go to the Career Services website.

4. People Project – John Meister
A photo project where we showcase people at CU Boulder and possibly in the community, disabled or not, student, faculty, staff, or community member, and highlighted them.  We need to form a committee to come up with the criteria, nomination & selection process, someone to interview the person and write their bio, as well as someone to photograph them.  Then we will frame and mat those pics and bios to be hung in the Disability Services hallway.
Those interested in participating are: Gerard, Amy, Kelly K., Annabel, Meghan, & Priscilla.
First meeting will be next Wed (Feb 9) in this room at 5.

5. Follow-up Items:

Good evening Karen,

On behalf of my students and I, a hearty thank you to you and your students for sharing their perspectives and experiences with regard to the built campus environment. I could tell students were truly inspired by their authentic narratives and their great sense of humor.

I hope this will be the beginning of a integral relationship between the Office of Disability Services and the College of Architecture and Planning.

With much appreciation and sincerity!

New semester, clean-up, first meeting, and an event already!!

Hey, All!  Happy New Year!  Hope you are all well-rested and ready to start the new semester.  Personally, I could use some more break!!!  :)  Oh well, time to go anyways!

With the new year, I've decided to do a little clean-up...on our email list.  SO.... If you have not attended ANY of our meetings or events AND you do not respond to this email, I will remove your name from the email list.  I hate getting unwanted emails, so I want to be conscientious of who I'm emailing.  If you are a regular member and attend events, you will not be removed.

Ok... Our first meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19th, at 5pm.  It will be in the conference next to Disability Services in the C4C building, the same place we've always had it.  Thank you to our faculty support, John Meister, for booking our room for us for the semester!  :)  There will be no guest speaker, as I would like to just get back together and discuss what we accomplished last semester and what we, as a group, hope to accomplish this semester.

We already have an event!!!!  Since it is before our first meeting, I need to do an online sign-up.
Who can help sit at the table for this one?

2011 Spring Student Involvement

AND

Volunteer Fair!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

2nd floor, UMC
It's the same thing we did last semester.  We sit at a table and talk about what our group does and why it's cool to be a member!  :)
Please let me know if you are able to participate!

Thanks,
Priscilla
